How to set Up Google Ads Conversion Tracking?

Last updated on January 26, 2025

Google Ads Conversion Tracking is a powerful tool that allows you to track the effectiveness of your ads by measuring the actions users take on your website after clicking on your ads. This can include actions like purchases, form submissions, or downloads. Here's a detailed guide to help you set up Google Ads Conversion Tracking.

Step 1: Access Your Google Ads Account

  • Log in to your Google Ads account at https://ads.google.com.

  • Click on the Tools & Settings icon (the wrench in the top right corner).

  • Under the Measurement section, click on Conversions.

Step 2: Create a New Conversion Action

  • Click the + button to create a new conversion action.

  • Select Website as the source of your conversion tracking.

  • Enter your website URL in the field provided and click Scan to enable Google Ads to recognize the type of action you want to track.

Step 3: Define the Conversion Action

  • Name your conversion action (e.g., "Purchase", "Sign-Up", "Download").

  • Choose the category of the conversion (e.g., purchase, lead, sign-up, etc.).

  • Set a value for the conversion (if applicable, such as the price of the product purchased). You can set a fixed value or choose to not use a value.

  • Select how to count conversions. Typically, you’ll want to count “Every” conversion for actions like purchases, but for other actions (e.g., sign-ups), you may want to count just “One” conversion per person.

Step 4: Get the Conversion Tracking Code

  • After defining your conversion action, click Create and Continue.

  • You’ll now see two pieces of code: the global site tag (gtag.js) and the event snippet.

    • Global Site Tag (gtag.js): This tag needs to be added to every page of your website, preferably within the section.

    • Event Snippet: This snippet needs to be placed on the thank-you page or the page that confirms the desired action (e.g., after a purchase or form submission).

Step 5: Add the Conversion Tracking Code to Your Website

  • Copy the global site tag code and paste it just before the closing tag on every page of your website.

  • Copy the event snippet and paste it on the confirmation page or the page where the conversion action occurs. This page should only appear once the user has completed the action you want to track (e.g., after a purchase or sign-up).

Step 6: Verify the Pixel Installation

  • After adding the code, it’s crucial to verify that the pixel is working correctly.

  • Use the Google Tag Assistant Chrome Extension to check if the conversion tracking tags are firing correctly.

  • If the pixel is set up properly, you should see a notification that the tag is active on the page.

Step 7: Monitor Conversions and Optimize

  • Once the pixel is installed, you can start tracking conversions in your Google Ads account.

  • Go to the Conversions section under Tools & Settings to view your conversion data.

  • Use this data to optimize your campaigns—adjust your ads, targeting, and bidding strategy based on the insights you gain from conversions.

Troubleshooting Tips for Google Ads Conversion Tracking

  • Pixel Not Firing: If you don't see conversion data, make sure the global site tag is installed on every page of your site and that the event snippet is on the correct conversion page.

  • No Data Showing: Sometimes, it can take up to 24 hours for conversion data to appear in your Google Ads account. Ensure you’re looking at the correct date range.

  • Duplicate Tags: If you see duplicate conversion tags or conflicting data, check to make sure you haven’t accidentally installed the tag more than once.
